Holle Wlokas, a consultant for the Transformation Energy Trust, is involved with the implementation of large-scale renewable energy projects in South Africa. The organisation is currently working with 102 projects across the country, as government approaches its fifth procurement round.
She explained how the projects have to share ownership with local communities so they establish trusts to benefit communities in a 50-kilometer radius. “They share at least 2.5% of their shareholdings, and some projects even share up to 40% with their community trusts,” she said.
She did, however, state that there are currently inadequate monitoring requirements in place – focusing only on spend with no evaluation of impact. Nonetheless, the South African government plans to commence procuring renewable energy and showcasing its implementation to other countries on the continent.
