Imperial Holdings’ business spans a range of sectors, as do the risks and opportunities the company faces. Those related to sustainability – such as issues around its environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices – can be difficult to recognise and quantify. To ensure its board was adequately equipped to understand these issues and make decisions accordingly, Imperial Holdings commissioned Trialogue to conduct a board member sustainability awareness session In April 2010.
The one-day workshop covered a basic background on sustainability, as well as its importance to the company. As a leader in sustainability consulting and reporting, Trialogue helped to identify areas for improvement within Imperial’s approach to sustainability. Among these were governance, codes and standards, leadership and other issues of strategic relevance.
To give the Imperial Holdings board the opportunity to learn from leaders in South African corporate sustainability, the workshop included presentations from the chief executives of both Woolworths and Nedbank. The two participants shared their experiences and insight into their sustainability journey.
