In 2011, Nedbank Private Wealth undertook the first comprehensive national survey on the giving behaviours of High Net Worth individuals (HNWs) in South Africa, the results of which were published in the Giving Report. Subsequently, a follow up survey was conducted in 2013, and a decision was taken to repeat the survey in 2016, the results of which were published in the Giving Report III.
The Giving Reports were well-received and provided good information to stimulate the debate on the topic of philanthropic giving by HNWs in South Africa.
Trialogue assisted Nedbank Private Wealth with the research, design and production of their third Giving Report, which was completed in 2016. The project consisted of several phases; research design and field research, analysis, write up and production, and was carried out in conjunction with research partners Genex, Groundpepper design, and an independent advisory panel.
The completed report, which can be accessed here, concluded that in 2015, 88% of South Africa’s high net worth individuals gave of their time, money services or goods to social causes. Non-cash donations increased in popularity to 78% from 67% in 2012. Of the social causes supported, 64% of donations are to recognised non-profit organisations.
Of the report, Noxolo Hlongwane, head of Philanthropy at Nedbank Private Wealth, said, “When the decision was made to produce the third edition of the Giving Report, we knew that we had to partner with an organisation that not only understood our business, but also the social context of our country. Trialogue’s wealth of experience with research and knowledge of the philanthropic sector made them the obvious partner for Nedbank Private Wealth”.
