The United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI) is an international network of investors working to put the six Principles for Responsible Investment into practice. Adrian Bertrand, recently appointed Head of Africa Network for the UNPRI and formerly responsible for sustainability issues at the Government Employees Pension Fund of South Africa (GEPF), talks about his plans to grow responsible investment in Africa.
What lessons will you be taking from the GEPF to the UNPRI?
The UNPRI has always been driven by asset owners and the GEPF, as the largest South African asset owner, provided me with an excellent platform to understand the local and global responsible investment landscape. I gained insight into how a pension fund works and learnt the importance of the board spending time discussing environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. I would like to use this experience to assist other pension funds with the roll out of their ESG commitments and strategies.
