William Gumede

William Gumede is Associate Professor and former Convener, Political Economy, School of Governance, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg; and Course-Leader, Central European University, Budapest. He is the Founder and Chairperson of the Democracy Works Foundation ( and the Chairperson of ActionAid.

Previously, Gumede was Senior Associate and Programme Director, Africa Asia Centre, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; Senior Associate Member and Oppenheimer Fellow, St. Antony’s College, Oxford University; Senior Research Fellow, London School of Economics and Political Sciences; and Course-Leader, New School University, New York.

He is the former Deputy and Managing Editor of The Sowetan newspaper and has authored bestselling books, including his most recent Restless Nation: Making Sense of Troubled Times (Tafelberg).
