William Gumede

William Gumede is Associate Professor and former Convener, Political Economy, School of Governance, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg; and Course-Leader, Central European University, Budapest. He is the Founder and Chairperson of the Democracy Works Foundation (www.democracyworks.org.za) and the Chairperson of ActionAid.

Previously, Gumede was Senior Associate and Programme Director, Africa Asia Centre, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; Senior Associate Member and Oppenheimer Fellow, St. Antony’s College, Oxford University; Senior Research Fellow, London School of Economics and Political Sciences; and Course-Leader, New School University, New York.

He is the former Deputy and Managing Editor of The Sowetan newspaper and has authored bestselling books, including his most recent Restless Nation: Making Sense of Troubled Times (Tafelberg).
