In the ever-evolving fields of social investment and sustainability, it is important for practitioners to share insights. Trialogue facilitates several opportunities for engagement, including the annual CSI Conference, CSI Forums and the EY Trialogue Sustainability Forums.

The Trialogue Strategic CSI Award

Launched in 2014, Trialogue’s annual Strategic CSI Award recognises outstanding examples of strategic CSI in practice. Companies’ CSI efforts have tended to focus on that process of giving, coupled with efforts to gain recognition by leveraging the social investment as a marketing exercise. It is however, possible for firms to achieve more substantial developmental impact while also deriving competitive advantage from the work of the CSI programme. This award aims to recognise those companies who have placed CSI in that mutually beneficial space where the project is able to demonstrate positive developmental outcomes and impact as well as substantial business benefit.

For 19 years The Trialogue CSI Handbook has been the publication that development and CSI practitioners turn to for thought leadership in corporate social investment in South Africa. Over the years, The Trialogue CSI Handbook has helped establish the standards for best practice in social investment in South Africa. As social investment has grown in stature and professionalism, The Trialogue CSI Handbook has remained the go-to reference guide on every practitioner’s desk, offering:
  • In-depth primary research with more than 100 CSI practitioners from leading companies and nearly 200 NPOs – This research enables the tracking of industry trends with comparative statistics going back more than 10 years
  • Quantification of the size of the sector, a statistic widely quoted in political and business circles, as well as analysis of CSI expenditure patterns

Eleven years ago, in 2004, Trialogue published its first handbook covering business sustainability practice with the tagline ‘smart strategies for responsible companies’. Today, Trialogue’s annual supplement on sustainability is distributed with the Financial Mail. Aimed at a readership of senior managers (such as SEC board members), the Review includes critical analysis of sustainability reporting and risks, informed guidance on integrating sustainability principles in business operations, and insights on effectively communicating to and engaging with various stakeholders.
This second edition of The Trialogue Funders Guide has been compiled as a user-friendly resource to help funders of social development, by simplifying the funding process and helping to make it more effective.

Our events

Trialogue hosts a range of informative events tailored specifically for professionals in the corporate responsibility field. The Trialogue CSI Conference is the most established of our events, being the leading annual event for CSI since 2008. We also run sustainability and CSI forums throughout the year. These attract practitioners by providing an opportunity to learn and engage on topical issues.
Trialogue’s CSI Conference and Expo, running since 2008, is the leading annual event for CSI and development practitioners to meet, share and learn. At Trialogue, our mission is to ensure that the annual conference provides delegates with new and inspired thinking, ultimately leading to improved practice and effectiveness of corporate social investment (CSI).

It is essential that corporates, government and civil society convene to explore what is working, what is not, and how we can work together to ensure that every rand spent by companies on development is used to good effect.

The Trialogue CSI Conference attracts more than 400 delegates from companies and NPOs from around the country. Plenary and breakaway sessions give space to more than 40 speakers and are designed to draw insights from delegates, which are then shared on this website. Trialogue has been hosting CSI forums since 2013. Held four times a year, these sessions provide valuable opportunities for corporate CSI practitioners to network, stay abreast of emerging trends and thinking within the sector, and share insights in a confidential environment.

In mid-2014, EY and Trialogue entered into a knowledge sharing partnership. Part of this partnership includes hosting forums where relevant sustainability topics are discussed and debated. Held bi-monthly in Johannesburg, the forums bring together thought leaders and focuses on best practice in the field of corporate sustainability, offering insights and stimulating debate with an informed audience.

Trialogue and EY are also collaborating on a research project to explore the mandate and functioning of social and ethics committees in South Africa.

We offer a regular training course for CSI practitioners and others responsible for CSI or engaged in community development. The course aims to boost their capacity to make sound decisions and increase the efficacy of CSI. The course is a two-day experiential training workshop in Johannesburg.

Trialogue’s CSI training workshop is invaluable for all CSI practitioners and company staff responsible for making these investments and engaged in community development, including:

      • CSI practitioners and management
      • Foundation/Trust managers
      • Line management and staff involved with the CSI programme
      • Regional coordinators
      • Field managers
      • Project managers and coordinators

The next CSI Training will focus on Social Return on Investment (SROI), in collaboration with Wizeimpact. The date for the next course is:
