William Gumede is associate professor and former convener of Political Economy at Wits University’s School of Governance, and course leader at the Central European University in Budapest. He is the founder and chairperson of the Democracy Works Foundation and the chairperson of ActionAid. Previously, Prof Gumede was senior associate and programme director at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; senior associate member and Oppenheimer fellow at St. Antony’s College, Oxford University; senior research fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, and course leader at the New School University in New York. He is the former deputy and managing editor of The Sowetan newspaper and has authored bestselling books, including his most recent Restless Nation: Making Sense of Troubled Times (Tafelberg).
