JSE: CSI project reviews

Date of work: 2025

Trialogue has been doing this for me for the past four years, and I’ve never had a problem with the quality of work or execution. I couldn’t have asked for a better team – they were always available and very professional.”

Idris Seedat, Head: Transformation and CSI | Marketing and Corporate Affairs

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s (JSE’s) primary function is to provide facilities for the listing and trading of securities in South Africa. Its role contributes to economic growth and value creation, which are critical to resolving South Africa’s challenges. In addition to this primary function, the JSE invests in the country’s future by contributing towards education, social development and environmental preservation initiatives that impact the communities it supports.

Since 2021 Trialogue has conducted reviews of the JSE’s CSI partners and programmes on an annual basis. In October 2025, the JSE once again contracted Trialogue to conduct a review of 17 CSI beneficiary organisations (partners receiving multi-year funding), 10 discretionary fund recipients (organisations receiving small once-off grants) and the JSE Empowerment Fund (JEF) Bursary Fund recipients. The objectives of the review were to assess how the funds provided were utilised, how the JSE’s contribution supported social outcomes, and the value of unrestricted funding for partner organisations.

In the tight timeframe of the review, Trialogue undertook the following activities:

  • Conducted a desktop review of partner and programme information
  • Interviewed the JSE CSI team and the team that manages the JEF bursary programme (part of HR Learning and Development)
  • Developed and circulated surveys to the 17 beneficiary organisations and 10 discretionary fund recipients
  • Developed and circulated surveys to the current JEF bursary beneficiaries and the bursary alumni

Trialogue then analysed the survey responses, interviews with the JSE representatives, and desktop information and presented the findings and recommendations to the JSE CSI team. Each year the JSE uses the findings and recommendations to refine its strategy and approach to each project.
